Theology of the Body Thursday #6: What Jason Derulo Gets Kinda Right

Be patient with this one. I know the first few seconds of the video are disgusting with how they objectify a woman’s body. There is another scene like that later on in the video. But the majority of the video doesn’t contain that.

Jason Derulo- Trumpets

Seeing this woman naked and having sex with her reminds him of music. If you can make it through the first few seconds, the video is kinda goofy. Every time he tries to do anything with her, a bunch of men in marching band outfits with trumpets burst in. Maybe the trumpet in his head is God talking (like in Exodus 19:19) to tell him to hold off until marriage.

The body is beautiful. It has rightfully inspired art (both holy and profane) throughout the ages. Seeing his love naked should inspire music. The body reveals the original good of creation.

Nakedness reveals the spousal meaning of the body which is the body’s “power to express love: precisely that love in which the human person becomes a gift and — through this gift– fulfills the very meaning of his being and existence.”

Not bad from a guy who previously wrote a song that is completely about a woman’s rear-end.
