John Paul II Novena: Day 6

Thank you, women who are mothers! You have sheltered human beings within yourselves in a unique experience of joy and travail. This experience makes you become God’s own smile upon the newborn child, the one who guides your child’s first steps, who helps it to grow, and who is the anchor as the child makes its way along the journey of life. – Letter to Women 2

John Paul II had nothing but praise for mothers! So much so, that people who like to bad-mouth JPII try to claim that he wanted all women “barefoot and pregnant in the kitchen.” That could not be further from the truth, but we’ll be exploring that over the next couple days.

And what shall we say of the obstacles which in so many parts of the world still keep women from being fully integrated into social, political and economic life? We need only think of how the gift of motherhood is often penalized rather than rewarded, even though humanity owes its very survival to this gift. Certainly, much remains to be done to prevent discrimination against those who have chosen to be wives and mothers. As far as personal rights are concerned, there is an urgent need to achieve real equality in every area: equal pay for equal work, protection for working mothers, fairness in career advancements, equality of spouses with regard to family rights and the recognition of everything that is part of the rights and duties of citizens in a democratic State.- Letter to Women 4

All too often, mothers are punished for being mothers, while the very survival of the species rests on their shoulders. They are responsible for forming the future of our world. A friend of mine recently posted on Facebook that “Mothers shouldn’t expect to be worshiped. What they do is nothing special. If animals have the same job you do, your job is nothing special.” (Right now, I can’t find the actual post. Maybe her mom saw it and made her take it down.) The post really bugged me. I am of the generation that we are made to feel useless if we stay at home with our children.

Mothers, either in the home or at work, need to hold their heads high. Again, they hold the future in their hands. Today, we pray for all mothers. May they know how important they are. May they be blessed with the patience they need to do their job. Open the world to their enormous gifts. Being a mother really changes you. It forces your heart open. Their empathetic, loving, receptive, open perspective is sorely needed in this world of anger, fear and violence. John Paul II, who respected mothers so much in life, please pray for them.
